Provider notes
Water. The Gazette reports the project uses a closed-loop water cooling system.
Community. Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell voiced support (2026-07-08), framing data centers as consistent with the city's industrial identity. However, neighboring/overlapping Linn County had recently adopted a temporary moratorium on data centers -- Cedar Rapids itself is not applying that moratorium here because the site is already zoned for light-industrial use (permitted since the early 2000s), so this specific project proceeds despite county-level backlash driving the moratorium elsewhere. No direct opposition testimony to THIS project was found.
What the source record says
Just north of Highway 30 on the southwest side. Over 98,000 sq ft, no city incentives, construction expected to start in fall 2026 or early spring 2027 depending on equipment availability. Permit documents name the applicant entity as CLOP Cedar Rapids, IA LLC. The Gazette reports the facility is intended for networking, signal boosting and storage rather than AI training or inference, so no aiClassification value is recorded — the existing enum cannot express 'assessed, not AI.' Oppidan built a comparable 60,000 sq ft, 5 MW facility in Des Moines in 2024, which is tracked separately.
Any MW value is reproduced as source-reported context. Its measurement boundary is not established consistently enough for comparison. Unknown is not zero.
Status history supplied by the source
- 2026-07-08 · source-reported permitted
Cedar Rapids confirmed the project after building permits were filed; the site has been zoned light industrial since the early 2000s, so a data center is a permitted use and no public hearing is required.
