Provider notes
Energy. Originally designed as an ERCOT-integrated demand-response/curtailable load site. On-site behind-the-meter natural-gas generation for this campus IS now confirmed via TCEQ Standard Permit Reg. 177263 — 10 turbines totaling 360.5 MW, 'for onsite use only for data centers and computing,' with a large expansion proposed — tracked separately as the power_generation record crusoe-abilene-onsite-generation-tx.
Community. City leadership has been enthusiastic about jobs and tax-base growth, framing the project locally as the city's largest single investment since Dyess Air Force Base; some nearby residents have raised construction-traffic concerns. No organized opposition campaign found.
These reviews flag conflicting scope, inconsistent source text or support that has not been established. A withheld value may appear in the explanation, but is not displayed as an established field. The upstream row remains attributed under Sources.
- Cooling: Previously held pending provider-field review. The concern has not been resolved by an independent source review for this captured edition; the field remains withheld.
What the source record says
Originally proposed Dec 2021 as Lancium's "Project Artemis" — a Bitcoin-mining and grid-demand-response campus using stranded/curtailed West Texas wind and solar power, with Lancium throttling load during ERCOT peak demand. Crusoe Energy has since built and operates AI/HPC data-center buildings on the site (publicly branded "Stargate Site 1"), with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as the tenant hosting NVIDIA GPU clusters for OpenAI's Stargate project — Oracle sits contractually between Crusoe and OpenAI; no confirmed direct OpenAI-Crusoe lease. Lancium retains land/electrical-infrastructure ownership; Crusoe leases and operates part of an approximately 800-1,000-acre campus. First 2 of 8 planned buildings (~200+ MW) were operational by mid-2025; remaining 6 are under construction, with a full 1.2 GW build-out targeted for completion in 2026-2027 (dates vary by source). Construction-workforce and total AI-era investment figures conflict significantly across sources (reported range: 2,000-9,000 workers; an unverified ~$11.6B raise) and are not repeated here as fact. Coordinates are approximate (geocoded from a listed street address, not parcel-confirmed — the ~800-1,000-acre campus could place any specific building up to ~1-2 miles from this point). Also known as the Lancium Clean Campus.
Any MW value is reproduced as source-reported context. Its measurement boundary is not established consistently enough for comparison. Unknown is not zero.
Status history supplied by the source
- 2021-12 · source-reported proposed
Lancium announces "Project Artemis": a Bitcoin-mining/grid-demand-response campus with Taylor County and the City of Abilene, projected at up to $2.4B over 20 years, scaling 200 MW to 1 GW.
- 2024 · source-reported under construction
Crusoe Energy begins building AI/HPC data-center buildings on the Lancium campus, pivoting the site from its original crypto-mining plan toward multi-tenant AI hosting (publicly branded "Stargate Site 1").
- 2025-06 · source-reported operational
First 2 of 8 planned buildings (~200+ MW) operational, hosting Oracle Cloud Infrastructure GPU capacity for OpenAI's Stargate project.
