U.S. data center map

Published totals

Across every published layer the map can draw 2,325 listings that have a supported or approximate coordinate (452 of them Census address interpolations of a published street and 54 state or local government address points); 1,036 more stay in the list because they have no usable coordinate. Data-center listings (3,115 source listings) are on by default; government registry records (246) are switched on in the Layers menu and never mean an operating center. 3,361 source listings are not a distinct-site total, and marker size does not imply capacity. These are not independently verified facilities or a census.

What does one marker represent? One source listing at its own supported coordinate, not a verified facility. Marker size is not capacity. A heavier ring means several records share a coordinate or are too close to select separately at this zoom. That shared view is not a same-site finding.

Each box works on its own. Data centers are shown by default; government records are context. Counts are source listings in that layer, not facilities.

Operator source listings include standalone entries and listings attached to licensed records. DataCenterData records include project, facility and water case-study records; each record states its evidence status.

Colors group source labels on markers, cluster rings and this legend. The same colors also cover operating, construction, approved, planned, expanding, expired and preleasing. Approved is not permitted, and planned is not proposed. The status menu still filters one original label. Unknown stays explicit.

State, status, precision and measurements

Show reported operating or operational listings in the data-center layers. Status groups include both wordings; the exact filter below keeps each source's wording separate.

Find stated power, area, cooling or design facts. These do not establish available capacity; missing facts do not establish absence.

Choosing a measurement excludes listings without a matching family, scope and timing. Provider capacity remains context; it is not ranked as reviewed IT power.

This map-area limit stays on this page. Shared links and the national overview keep your other filters, but include all map areas.

View by reported status. This colors the provider's lifecycle label. It is not a DataCenterData classification, and the share of labeled rows is not a coverage rate or a census. Operating model, workload, provider confidence, cooling and infrastructure context stay off because those fields are missing, incomparable, or easy to misread. Unknown stays unknown.

Source-reported operational Source-reported under construction or expanding Source-reported permitted or approved Source-reported proposed, planned or pre-leasing Source-reported cancelled or expired Status mixed, not stated, unknown or a registry record Dashed ring: approximate location (provider label, Census address interpolation or government address point), not a different status Numbered circle: that many records would overlap at this zoom; it is drawn at their centre and its ring shows their reported statuses in proportion. Size is record count, not capacity. Select it to list every record with its source layer, or zoom in to separate them.

    How to read this map
How to read this map. Layers are independent: data-center listings (licensed directory rows, operator source listings, DataCenterData records) are on when the page opens; state or local and federal EPA registry records are context you switch on, and a certification, permit, application or registration never means an operating data center. No transmission, power-plant, substation or other energy layer is offered: no such dataset with established identity, rights and dates is published here, and proximity would not prove a connection. Exact means the provider labels the point exact and its own note does not describe it as approximate; DataCenterData has not checked the point. Approximate and representative markers locate a broader place and must not be read as parcel coordinates; an approximate point labeled Census address interpolation is the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder’s address-range estimate for the published street, reviewed by DataCenterData, never a rooftop or parcel. A listing published on a licensed row’s own page is linked to that row’s marker rather than given a second one. Zoom in and select any dot; shared coordinates and dots too close to select separately open one chooser naming every record and its source layer (they are drawn as one numbered circle at their centre, with a zoom action when they sit at different coordinates). The Fit U.S. button resets the view to the contiguous states without changing filters; Alaska, Hawaii and D.C. buttons move the view there. Source-reported operational, permitted, construction, proposed and cancelled labels are kept separate. Base-map tiles are requested directly from OpenStreetMap only on this page; use the HTML state and directory links if you prefer not to load them. Geographic proximity to a transmission line, fiber route, pipeline, power plant or substation is not shown and would not prove a connection. Without JavaScript, the filters do not change the map.
    Source, precision and reuse

Adapted from Compute Atlas by Edward Kubiak, edition 1.34.1, under CC BY 4.0. DataCenterData adds filters, permanent record links and explicit precision labels. Operator-listed, federal, state or local, and reviewed rows are separate layers already published on their own pages; their approximate points come from the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder (address-range interpolation of the published street, reviewed by DataCenterData) or, where that gave no usable answer, from the state or local address-point service named on the point, under the same review. A government record does not establish that a data center is operating. Base-map tiles are from OpenStreetMap contributors. Use a record’s cited sources—not the marker alone—for decisions.
