Vermont's commercial building energy standards amendments, effective July 14, 2026, define a data center as a room above 20 watts per square foot and 10 kW of information-technology load and, on the 2024 pathway, require those systems to meet ASHRAE 90.4 with stated climate-zone substitutions.

On 28 May 2026 the Governor of Vermont vetoed H.727, the sustainable data center deployment bill, in a letter to the General Assembly saying existing law already gives Vermont substantial authority over data centers and that the bill would set a precedent with broader economic consequences.

Vermont S.205 proposed a moratorium, until 1 July 2030, on operating or building AI data centers of more than 100 megawatts of new load, and a Public Utility Commission investigation and report.
