ERCOT ride-through requirements for large computational loads (NOGRR 282)

Enacted legislation or regulation

In effect This instrument is recorded as currently in effect as of the dataset date.

Scope

Nodal Operating Guide Revision Request 282 adds frequency and voltage ride-through requirements for Large Computational Loads (Operating Guide sections 2.6.4 and 2.15), so that such loads do not trip during specified frequency and voltage disturbances. A customer interconnecting or maintaining a Large Computational Load must ensure it complies unless an exemption in the text applies. Approved by the Public Utility Commission on 9 July 2026; effective 1 August 2026.

Summary

ERCOT Nodal Operating Guide Revision Request 282 sets frequency and voltage ride-through requirements for Large Computational Loads, the load type defined in NPRR 1308 to include data centers and cryptocurrency mining facilities. ERCOT's stated reason is that it has seen repeated losses of such load during ordinary voltage disturbances since October 2022. The Public Utility Commission approved the revision on 9 July 2026 and it took effect on 1 August 2026.

What this does not establish

  • NOGRR 282 applies to Large Computational Loads as defined in NPRR 1308; it does not itself use the words data center in the operative sections read.
  • The report's redline contains superseded and replacement exemption dates side by side; this record does not state the exemption cut-off date.
  • ERCOT said it intends a separate revision for ride-through risks of other Large Loads; that is not part of this record.

None recorded.

Relationships

Supersession means a later instrument replaces the earlier legal effect. Repeal links identify the repeal instrument and the measure it ends. A later implementation or related letter is not treated as a replacement unless the record says so.
