Senate Bill 1179 of 2026, data center transparency and accountability act (pending)

Legislation introduced (any outcome)

Proposed This proposal has not been enacted or adopted.

Scope

Senate Bill 1179 of 2026 would create the data center transparency and accountability act. Before beginning a project to build or expand a data center that needs local land use approval or a building permit, a person would submit to the local unit of government a data center disclosure and impact statement covering the owner or operator, buildout phases, projected electric demand and water use per phase, state and local incentives sought or received, projected jobs and wage ranges, the utility costs to be paid by the data center, by the utility and potentially by other ratepayers, and any requested special rates or utility-funded upgrades. The local unit would post the statement on its website at least 60 days before any land use decision, and materially false statements would carry civil fines. It was introduced and referred to the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment on 10 September 2026.

Summary

Senate Bill 1179 of the 2025-2026 Michigan session would require a public data center disclosure and impact statement before a new or expanded data center project, covering power and water use, incentives, jobs and wages, and which utility costs fall on the data center, the utility or other ratepayers, posted by the local government at least 60 days before a land use decision. It was introduced on 10 September 2026 and is a proposal, not law.

What this does not establish

  • The statement refers to a separate 'data center resource responsibility and accountability act', which is not recorded here.

Unresolved questions

None recorded.

Relationships

Supersession means a later instrument replaces the earlier legal effect. Repeal links identify the repeal instrument and the measure it ends. A later implementation or related letter is not treated as a replacement unless the record says so.

  • No related action is recorded.
