Planned as a natural-gas-powered campus with an on-site natural gas generation facility and the ability to sell surplus power back to local utilities; roughly $176 million in regional energy infrastructure upgrades is estimated. Residents' opposition has centered on the on-site gas generation and diesel backup rather than grid supply.
Community. Edgecombe County commissioners unanimously approved a zoning-ordinance amendment enabling the Kingsboro project (Nov 2025) with no opposition documented at that hearing; a separate, smaller ESS project at another Tarboro site had been rejected by the town council earlier in 2025 amid resident opposition.
